The Story About our Insect Protein

Synne Hemsen Berg Synne Hemsen Berg

We source our insect protein (black soldier fly larvae) from a local producer in Cape Town. They are an innovative, highly competent and driven company that seek to be the best in all areas of their business. They are committed to providing their staff with excellent working conditions, skills development and opportunities in their company. The farm is also EU-certified and adheres to strict regulations.

Nala Health is produced locally in South Africa and a lot of the challenges faced in our country can be solved through good education and job opportunities. It is therefore important for us to support companies that care about their employees and our planet. We want to be a part of more sustainable and honest food production that positively contributes to our dog’s health, people and the planet.

Insect Protein is Circular

A circular economy is based on reusing, reducing and giving new life to what we consume. The focus is to create as little waste as possible and use the resources we have with consideration. Creating more circular economies is an important part of sustainable development and combating climate change.

The larvae we use in Nala Health eat malt from beer production in Cape Town. This is the clean waste product left after the beer is brewed and contains good fibre and nutrients for the larvae. For every 1kg of insect protein, they divert 5kg of nutritious malt that would otherwise have ended up in a landfill.

The waste product from larvae production is called frass and is an excellent fertiliser. The frass is used on local farms, closing the production loop.

The “Larvae Mom”

Zukiswa is one of their passionate and dedicated employees. Zukiswa is the self-proclaimed “larvae mom” and lady who cares for our insect protein from neonate to healthy larvae. She is a mom of 5 and the sole breadwinner in her family. Zukiswa has single-handedly put all her children through school and provided them with a good foundation for a bright future. She is an inspiration!

Our insect protein are a clean source of digestible protein. It contains no growth hormones or antibiotics. In addition to being an excellent source of nutrition, black soldier fly larvae production is much kinder to the planet.
