Nestled in the heart of Cape Town, the Silver Muzzle Sanctuary stands as a beacon of love and compassion for senior dogs abandoned by their owners. This heartwarming journey began in 2010 when the founder, Reece, was involved in an accident that forced her to change her path in life.

The Birth of Silver Muzzle Sanctuary
In 2010, a simple call from my son, who was working with missionaries at the local Community Center, changed my life. He asked if I wanted to take in an old, homeless dog. Without hesitation, I said, “Of course I do.” This marked the beginning of my journey to feed and care for the many starving dogs in Westlake.
As I was in the area, I was struck by the tragic conditions many dogs were living in. This sight moved me to action, and I began making daily trips with my car loaded with dog food, water, and medical supplies to ensure no dog went hungry. This mission continued for years as PawFriends Animal Rescue Organization until a life-altering accident occurred.
A New Beginning from Tragedy
A devastating motorcycle accident left me unable to walk for about a year, making me feel useless. However, this period of despair led to a divine revelation: I could turn my home into a sanctuary for old dogs abandoned by their owners. Thus, The PawFriends Silver Muzzle Sanctuary NPO 138-085 was born, providing a haven for senior dogs to live out their days in peace and comfort.
The Joy of Caring for Senior Dogs
Senior dogs are a joy to care for. They are calm, grateful, and appreciative of the love and affection they receive. As word spread about our sanctuary, more dogs in need of care and attention found their way to us. Nutrition plays a crucial role in the recovery and well-being of these dogs, many of whom have spent their lives malnourished and neglected. We were getting cases of extreme starvation and abuse.
Discovering Nala Health
I am a strong believer in good nutrition. It is crucially important for a dog who has spent a lifetime eating potato peels, tomato ends or pap. You’re fighting a lifetime of malnutrition and parasite infestation with these loving needed dogs. Preferring a food without GMOs or colourants or antibiotics/steroids can be a challenge.
I always read the ingredient list carefully, and it’s challenging to find a complete food with easily digestible protein, healthy fat, and without GMOs, dyes, or antibiotic/steroid residues. I’m particularly sceptical when I see terms like animal by-products, meat meal, poultry protein, and animal fat – what exactly do these ingredients contain?
